Der Titel unserer CD, Cumbees, steht als Synonym für den kulturellen Austausch zwischen Europa und Südamerika, bei dem der Gitarre eine wichtige Rolle zukommt. Als die ersten Schiffe von Spanien aus die neuen Territorien eroberten, war die Gitarre mit an Bord und schon bald entwickelten sich aus der Verschmelzung traditioneller europäischer Musik mit anderen Kulturen neue Formen und Moden. Santiago de Murcia reiste im 17. Jhd. nach Mexico um die Musik der neuen Territorien zu erforschen und hinterließ eine Sammlung mit Tänzen für Barockgitarre, die neben Bearbeitungen europäischer Musik auch Tänze mit Elementen der Musik der westafrikanischen Sklaven beinhalten. Die klassische Gitarre, wie wir sie heute kennen, bildet noch immer ein Bindeglied zwischen der so genannten ernsten Musik und der Unterhaltungsmusik. Während Komponisten wie Leo Brouwer aus Cuba, der mit seinem Stück einen neoromantisch, avantgardistischen Musikstil vertritt, erinnert die Musik von Alejandro Peralta-Beher  aus Chile mehr an die streng kontrapunktische Kompositionsweise europäischer Barockkomponisten, die er mit Rhythmen des „Tango Nuevo“ kombiniert. Musiker wie der Brasilianer Paolo Bellinati schöpfen ihre musikalische Inspiration aus den reichen Quellen ihrer traditionellen Tänze und Rhythmen, die mit Elementen des Jazz vermischt werden.  Maximo Diego Pujol vertritt mit seinem Stück „Grises y soles“ den argentinischen „Tango Nuevo“, der starke Wurzeln zur europäischen Musik des 19. Jahrhunderts aufweist.  Schließlich der Komponist und Gitarrist Patrick Roux, der als Kanadier französischer Abstammung  in seinen Kompositionen die Liebe zur südamerikanischen Musik zum Ausdruck bringt.

The title piece of our CD, “Cumbees” (a dance from the 17th century with African-American roots), is a synonym for the cultural exchange between Europe and South America in which an important role is given to the guitar.  When the first sailors from Spain conquered new territories, the guitar traveled on-board with them as a light and portable instrument. Pretty soon new forms and styles developed from the fusing of traditional European music with other cultures. The Spaniard, Santiago de Murcia, traveled to Mexico in the 17th century to explore the music of the new territories, and left behind a collection of dances for the baroque guitar, which, in addition to arrangements of European dances, also contained dances with elements from the West African slaves. The classical guitar created -then as it does now – a connecting link between the so-called serious music and music for entertainment.  While composers like Leo Brouwer from Cuba, represent a neo-romantic avant-garde style with their music, the composition by Alejandro Peralta Beher from Chile reminds us of the strict counterpoint of J.S. Bach’s settings which he combines with rhythms of the “Tango Nuevo”. Musicians like the Brazilian Paolo Bellinati, create their inspirations from the rich sources of their traditional dances and rhythms that are mixed with jazz elements. Maximo Diego Pujol represents the Argentinean tango with his work, “Grises y soles”, which provides evidence for the strong roots from the European music of the 19th century. Finally, there is the composer and guitarist, Patrick Roux, a Canadian with French origins, whose influences from the music of Astor Piazzola and elements of jazz, present a wonderful symbiosis.
